It is that time of year again! The leaves are changing colors, the air is getting colder, and Halloween is just around the corner. While most people think of Halloween as a time for fun and candy, it is also important to remember to keep your child's teeth healthy.
8 out of 10 parents admit their child’s oral health habits suffer during the holidays, according to the Delta Dental survey. That means November through January is critical for parents looking to maintain healthy smiles all winter long. So what do you need to know? Here are three easy tricks to help you do just that.
1. Give them sugar-free candy
Halloween is a time for candy and lots of it. To keep your child’s teeth healthy, consider switching out their traditional sugary treats for sugar-free alternatives. These candy options taste just as delicious but without the added risk of cavities. Moreover, with so many brands offering sugar-free options, your little ones will not even realize the difference! So this Halloween, make sure to add some sugar-free candy to your trick-or-treat stash. It is just one small step to help keep those smiles sparkling.
2. Have them brush their teeth afterward
Even sugar-free candy can stick to teeth and feed harmful bacteria that lead to plaque and cavities. Sugar can stick to the surfaces of your teeth and contribute to tooth decay if not properly removed. Encourage your little ones to brush their teeth after trick-or-treating or eating candy. This will help to remove leftover sugar and prevent cavities. Plus, it's a good chance to freshen up your breath for the next round of trick-or-treating!
3. Make sure they visit the dentist after the spooky season
Even with all of your child's precautions, it is important to have them visit the dentist after Halloween. This is a crucial step in keeping their teeth healthy, and it is important to do it as soon as possible after Halloween. That way, they can get any necessary treatment and be on their way to a healthy smile, allowing Dr. Boyer to check for any damage that may have been done.
Halloween is a great time to let your kids be festive and have some fun, but it is also important to remember their teeth! By following these three easy tricks, you can help keep your children’s teeth healthy this Halloween season.
